What Causes Dandruff?

Dandruff is caused by dry skin and yeast/fungi. If the body lacks omega-3’s fats skin can become dry which is a lush environment for harmful yeast and fungi. The body requires an omega-3:6 ratio of roughly 1-2.

Dandruff Treatment

Avoid high Omega-6 foods

Vegetable Oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil and improperly raised animals fats such as bacon, sausage, lard, tallow, butter and cream contain a high amounts of omega-6’s and many other harmful health factors.

Note: It is easy to become omega-3 deficient, even on a WAPF diet. Healthy pastured raised fats from organ meats, butter, cream, tallow, bacon, sausage and lard contain a negative omega-3:6 ratio of roughly -5 or more. These foods are essential and great to eat but we need an omega-3 source.

Eat Foods high in Omega-3

WAPF’s super food cod fish liver oil only has an omega-3:6 of 25 which isn’t enough. A highly cherished super food among many of Weston A. Price’s visits are fish eggs, also known as fish roe or caviar. Fish eggs contain a omega-3:6 ratio of 85 along with a plethora of other benefits! A regular dose of 1-2 tbs. of fish eggs a day will do.

Note: There are three types of omega-3s: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). EPA and DHA are from animal foods and ALA from plants. When we consume ALA our body very poorly converts it to EPA or DHA. Krill Oil is great source of omega-3s but fish eggs are still best.

Use Natural Skin/Hair Products

Scalp irritation might be caused by toxic skin/hair products. The skin absorbs everything directly into the bloodstream including air. If it’s not edible then don’t put it on your skin is a good rule to follow. A nourished body can produce beautiful skin/hair without shampoo.

The best way to nourish your scalp is to apply Vitamin A and Omega-3's directly to the skin. Lets do this by adding about a teaspoon of fermented fish liver oil with high mineral butter to coconut oil. Rub this mixture into your hair and scalp then let it set overnight. Wash out with natural shampoo in the morning. Repeat this process 2-3 times per week until dandruff stops.

Kill Yeast/Fungi

Harmful yeast/fungi feed off sugar so limit sugar and improperly prepared grains. Kill off yeast/fungi by adding a few drops of turpentine or kerosene to your fish liver oil coconut oil mixture. Yes you heard me correctly, these substances have been used as miracle remedies for a very long time.

Only a few drops. Especially with turpentine only 1 or 2 drops. Turpentine is the most potent of the essential oils. It you experience a burning sensation, you will be okay but use less next time. Other essential oils such a myrrh, frankincense and tea tree oil do a good job at killing harmful bacteria and fungi.

Dandruff is caused by dry skin and yeast/fungi. Dry skin is a sign of omega-3 deficiency which is common even on a WAPF diet. Eat fish eggs to restore omega-3 : omega-6 balance of 1:1. Use a dandruff shampoo to quickly kill harmful yeast./fungi and stop flakes. Change to natural skin/hair products or no products.

Danruff might just be build up. Every few weeks be sure to exfoliate scalp of dead skin and other debris.

This is a concise, practical article and I appreciate all of your research! Have you tried sneaking the fish eggs into any dishes? It seems like they could be added at the very end to most savory dishes and not change the flavor too much. I see why you are saying that roe are a more effective way to get the omega-3 we need instead of salmon or say raw walnuts. However, I wonder if Weston A. Price's idyllic Swiss villager diet was able to fulfill this need.

Thank you for your amazing comment and questions! You really know your stuff!

I haven't used fish eggs in any dishes, I eat about 1 tsp with a spoon twice a day. Do not cook fish eggs because their fats are delicate and go rancid when heated. There is a Greek dip by the name of Taramosalata that looks pretty tasty. Give that a shot!

Yes, I'm not sure how the Swiss villagers got their needed amount of Omega-3's. Both high quality raw diary and organ meats contain poly-unsaturated fats. This is more than enough for individuals who are healthy but more is needed when in recovery from disease and illness.

Poly-unsaturated fat deficiency does play a big role in dandruff. Most importantly dandruff is a sign of bacteria infection through out the body. People with dandruff usually have other symptoms like athletes foot or yeast infections. So it is extremely important to check to see if our gut flora is in balance. This is a really easy test you can do at home:

Here is an article on how to make yogurt that will help restore gut flora balance.
